Sounds as if you have it in Power Reserve. Press and hold the side button to turn return to normal mode. If that doesn't work, it probably means the watch doesn't have enough power to turn back on. Charge it and try again.
Meg St._Clair,

Glad it helped!
I just had a similar problem, but I was not in Power Save Mode. For some reason, my watch remained illuminated for 15 minutes. Changed watch faces, didn't matter. Pressed the crown to get to apps display, then back to watch mode, no change. Deliberately went into Power Reserve mode, no change (watch face remained illuminated). Finally pressed and held side button to reboot the watch, and that fixed it. Watch went from 47% charge to 44% in those 15 minutes. A real mystery to me. Any ideas?

This seems like good advice, and better than I got from Apple Support (who basically said "Hey, anything can happen once. If it happens again, get back to us.") I would imagine there is some diagnostic routine they can run through the "secret port" under the watchband connector. I'll give it try and report back.
